Disney Vacation Club Tips

"What room type is best for my family"

I am a Disney Vacation Club Member who – as a part of my participation in the Disney Parks Mom’s Panel - may be compensated from time to time. All views expressed below are my own, however my response has been edited for clarity.

The evening lights on Main Street, U.S.A., the smell of baked goods and waffle cones, the music, and the view of Cinderella Castle; if I could spend every evening on a bench outside the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor and watch the people go by, I would. It was the allure of being able to spend more of my vacations in those magical locations that drew me into learning more about what was going on at those Disney Vacation Club Kiosks. My husband, who did not grow up on a steady diet of Disney, was skeptical of letting his wife’s emotional side make such a large family decision. The key to our decision and I think the key to much of Disney Vacation Club’s appeal and success, is the amazing flexibility. There is a vacation, resort, and room type for every family.

One of the classic questions is "Which resort is the best resort to stay at?" And for those considering Membership, or how to best use their Vacation Points, the question is often, "Which type of room should we get?" The answer to both these questions is the same, the perfect choice is different for every family, and even for each vacation!

If you are considering Disney Vacation Club Membership, you may be struggling with how many Vacation Points will work best for your family. Which type of room should we plan on staying in? While a larger family is more limited in choices, obviously you can’t and shouldn’t put your family of 8 in a Deluxe Studio, party size alone should not be the only factor when considering a particular room type. In addition to the size of your travel party, consider the ages of your group, will you want to bring extended family or friends in the future, sleeping and personal space needs, eating habits, and of course, location, location, location!

For a smaller family or a couple who loves a weekend getaway to Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, a Deluxe Studio may be the best choice for you. Deluxe Studios sleep up to 4 Guests, and select resorts even sleep up to 5! All Deluxe Studios feature a kitchenette which can be perfect for that quick breakfast and cup of coffee before heading out for the day, or storing snacks and drinks for the little ones, or maybe a bottle of wine for the adults!

I have often said that Disney Vacation Club is the best money I have ever spent on a door. The door between myself and my children! You may find this door works well for you too, as 1 and 2 Bedroom Villa accommodations truly offer my family many of the comforts of home, as well as enough space for our family to spread out. We’ve been Disney Vacation Club Members for ten years, and when our kids were young we enjoyed the ability to put the children to bed in one room, while we were able to stay up and watch television in another. Now that my boys are teenagers, everyone has a more relaxing stay when they have their own space.

The larger villas are also a good value for my family because we make use of the kitchen, as well as the washer and dryer. The cost for our family of six to dine out at every meal can add up, but with the full kitchen, we eat our breakfasts in, and usually several more meals during the week. With teenage boys, keeping our villa fridge stocked is key. A teenager with a full stomach makes everyone's life easier! And in the era of bag fees on airlines, packing light and doing the wash on vacation, while it may not sound appealing, really does save us money.

Would you like to someday bring extended family with you? Have you ever considered splurging on a Grand Villa? With room for up to 12 Guests, a Grand Villa is the perfect home base for that family reunion or holiday trip for the whole family. With the flexibility to bank and borrow Vacation Points, a Disney Vacation Club Grand Villa may be in your future someday.

Speaking of "someday," it will be here before you know it, so keep that in mind too. When we became Members, we had three little boys at home, and that was going to be it. We chose Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas as our Home Resort because we loved the fact that we could fit a family of five in a 1 Bedroom Villa. Fast forward a few years, and a little reconsidering, and we added a long-awaited princess to the family! But with Disney Vacation Club, this wasn’t a problem, and stays in 2 Bedroom Villas are now our norm. When we realized that in a few more years there could be honeymoons and grandkids, we decided to add-on with an additional contract. When the kids are older, we’re planning on spending a few weeks each winter in a Deluxe Studio being Disney "snowbirds." The beauty of Disney Vacation Club is that your vacations can change as your family does. When others ask me, "What are you going to do when your kids outgrow Disney vacations?" My answer has always been, "Who said we were going just for the kids?"
