I have an allergy to UV and can get very unwell when in direct sunlight for a prolonged period. Are there any outdoor ride queues I should avoid and/or be extra prepared for?

Hi Cheryl-Louise, and welcome back to planDisney! We’re so happy to see you’ve sent in another question. I’m sure your allergy to UV rays requires extra planning any time you’re traveling, so I’m happy to help with this today.

The good news is that most ride queues at Walt Disney World Resort are at least partially indoors, and many are entirely indoors. Other rides have queues that are outdoors but are covered. Let’s take a look at each park:

Magic Kingdom - You’ll find that many rides in this park have queues that are partially outdoors and uncovered, so when the line is a little longer, you may experience more sun exposure until you reach the indoor queue area. Some of these rides include Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, Haunted Mansion, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, TRON Lightcycle / Run, and Under the Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid. Although these rides have part of the queue outdoors, many have shade. However, a few rides that have a queue almost entirely outdoors with little shade are Astro Orbiter, The Barnstormer, The Magic Carpets of Aladdin, Tomorrowland Speedway, and Tomorrowland People Mover.

EPCOT - Great news! Almost every ride at EPCOT has a queue that is entirely indoors. This park will be great for you because rides and attractions are often inside buildings, and you will also find many indoor areas as you explore the countries around the World Showcase. The only ride that has a queue with a large area outdoors is Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. However, even that outdoor area has a cover. A tip for you on this ride is to consider the Single Rider Line. That line is often entirely indoors. The queue for Frozen Ever After is also often partially outdoors, as well, but a large section of queue is indoors.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios - Much like Magic Kingdom, there are a handful of rides that have queues partially outdoors but then the line moves inside or under cover. Rides with a portion of the queue outside include Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Slinky Dog Dash, and The Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park - A big part of exploring this park involves being outdoors, so you may want to plan ahead for more sun. Many of the trails where you can see animals and explore the various lands are in direct or partial sunlight. Some rides also have queues partially outdoors, including Avatar Flight of Passage, Kali River Rapids, and Zootopia: Better Zoogether!

For shorter wait times, I encourage you to consider purchasing Lightning Lane passes. These will allow you to skip the standby line and wait in shorter liners, which will help you avoid outdoor waits entirely on some rides.

Cheryl-Louise, I hope this helps you plan ahead so you can enjoy a comfortable day in each park. If you have any more questions, come back and see us here at planDisney. We are always here to help and love adding extra pixie dust to your Disney vacation planning!

    Your pal,
