Hi Jeff,
Disney World has done a fabulous job of ensuring that the theme parks are accessible to everyone. The
Services for Guests with Mobility Needs Guide does a thorough job of explaining all of the nuances of navigating Disney's theme parks with a wheelchair, ECV, or any other mobility device. I like to review it ahead of time so I have a good understanding of which rides and attractions will require vehicle transfers and which ones you can remain in your ECV to enjoy.
If you do not typically use an ECV or wheelchair and need to
rent an ECV while at Disney World, they also have you covered. These rentals are on a first-come-first-served basis. There are no reservations accepted so if you need one of these devices, I recommend arriving early. The rental locations are right inside the entrance to each theme park. Keep in mind that if you rent from Disney World, you will not be able to take the ECV out of the theme park. You will return the ECV before you leave the theme park. If you are traveling to another Disney theme park on the same day, you will have to keep your receipt and show it to the rental location when you arrive. You will not have to pay the rental fee more than once a day, but you will also not be guaranteed an ECV when you arrive at the second location.
If your wife needs an ECV while on transportation, at your Disney Resort hotel, or you are worried about availability there are other options. Disney World has a featured provider called ScooterBug which is authorized to deliver ECVs directly to
Bell Services at your Disney Resort hotel and pick them up from there when you leave. This is super helpful for people who know they will need the ECV throughout the entire time they are visiting.
Happy Planning,
Jenna
