Ahoy, Aimee!
I'm so happy to welcome you aboard planDisney, and I’m so glad you brought your question our way. Planning a Disney Cruise is half the fun, especially when you’re counting down to your time at sea. But consider this your friendly warning: once you’ve sailed with Disney Cruise Line, you may find yourself planning your next cruise before you’ve even stepped off the ship!
As a wheelchair user myself, I know how important it is to understand exactly what
accessibility features will be available in your stateroom. I’m happy to help put your mind at ease! Disney Cruise Line does a wonderful job of making its ships welcoming and accessible for Guests with a variety of needs, including through its accessible staterooms.
In the main bathroom, you’ll find a single bathroom with a ramped threshold, along with a roll-in shower equipped with a fold-down seat, grab bars, and an adjustable-height showerhead. There’s also an emergency pull cord, lowered towel bars, and a toilet with grab bars. The vanity is designed with clearance underneath, making it easier to roll up in a wheelchair.
Your stateroom also includes several other accessibility features that can make your stay more comfortable. The closet has a pull-down rod for easier access to hanging clothes. If you’ve booked a stateroom with a verandah, you’ll also have a ramped threshold leading outside, as well as additional space. The stateroom door is at least 32 inches wide, and the bed is lower to make transfers easier. You’ll also have additional space throughout the stateroom to maneuver comfortably in the room.
I’d also recommend taking a look at Disney Cruise Line’s
Information for Guests with Disabilities or Medical Conditions guide before your sailing. It offers a helpful overview of the accessibility features available throughout the ships, as well as the range of services available to Guests who may need additional assistance.
If your son will need any
specific services or accommodations, you’ll also want to complete Disney Cruise Line’s
Special Services Request Form. Disney recommends submitting the form no later than 120 days before European sailings and 30 days before sailings departing from U.S. ports. These are recommended advance-notice timeframes that give Disney Cruise Line an opportunity to review your requests and make any necessary arrangements before you set sail.
Aimee, I know that was a lot of information to take in, but I hope it gives you a helpful place to start as you begin planning for your Disney Cruise. If any other questions come up along the way, you’re always welcome to sail back over to planDisney.
SEAS the Day,
Kami
