Welcome to planDisney! I'm so happy you dropped in with your question about renting a scooter or ECV to assist with mobility during your Walt Disney World vacation.
I can speak from experience! I needed mobility assistance after an accident a few years ago, and I
rented ECVs both in the parks from Disney and from ScooterBug, Walt Disney World's featured provider, during my recovery. What I found is that both rental methods work well, depending on the level of assistance you need and the length of your visit.
The ECVs in the theme parks, water parks and Disney Springs are for use within the location only. You pick them up just inside the entrance and must return them before you exit. So this is great if you can get from the parking lot or Disney transportation station to the entrance without a lot of difficulty and you don't need the ECV at your resort or for travel around the Walt Disney World property.
In my case, on the day I rented an ECV in Epcot, I used my personal wheelchair from the parking lot and then transferred to the ECV once we were inside. It was efficient for a one-day visit.
On the two occasions when we had longer stays during my recovery, I found renting an ECV from ScooterBug for my length of stay to be the answer. The company delivered the ECV to Bell Services at my resort each time, and I dropped it back there before departure.
I was able to ride the ECV onto Disney buses, the monorail and the
Skyliner, around the resorts and Disney Springs, into restaurants and throughout the theme parks. Because my mobility was extremely limited during those weeks, having constant access to an ECV was the only way my family could continue with the plans we had made long before my accident.
