I got a pearl from Akoya Pearls. I just wanted to drill a hole in the middle and wear on a chain necklace. I was told they only drill holes on specific days. Has this changed now and they do it every day?

    Hello Angela!

Thanks for bringing your question to planDisney. While I haven’t had the chance to pick a pearl at Akoya Pearls in the Mitsukoshi Department Store at EPCOT, I’ve loved watching the excitement as other guests discover the treasures hidden within their chosen shells. It’s such a magical moment, made even more special by the enthusiasm of the Cast Members who help create these special memories.

Though I haven't plucked a pearl myself, I have picked quite a few treasures in the form of friends. My panel pal Elaine is more precious than any jewel, and I turned to her to help answer your question. Elaine visited Akoya Pearls this morning and spoke with a wonderful Cast Member named Eriko. Eriko shared that while they occasionally host pop-up events for drilling pearls for chain jewelry, this service is not currently available and she couldn't provide a future schedule.  It seems these events are a bit like pearls themselves, rare and unexpected treasures when they do occur!

Eriko didn't let Elaine leave empty-handed, however, and pointed her toward the jewelry counter right next to the Pick-a-Pearl area. There, she discovered several cage-style settings and pre-made mountings that would allow you to wear your pearl as a necklace without needing to drill a hole. One resembling Cinderella's Carriage caught my eye in the photo Elaine shared, but swirls, crowns, flowers, anchors, and even teddy bear options were available on today's visit. Keep in mind that availability is always subject to change but I'm hopeful you'll find something to suit your style.

If you’re dreaming of a more custom creation, you might consider taking your pearl to a local jeweler who can transform it into the perfect keepsake. Elaine actually did just that with a similar treasure she uncovered on another adventure. She always has the best pearls of wisdom!

Angela, I’m sorry I couldn't provide a more definitive answer about drilling availability, but I hope these tips help you create something magical. Remember, pearls are formed through patience and a bit of magic, just like the special memories waiting for you at Walt Disney World Resort. If we can answer any additional questions as you prepare for your next visit please come back and let us know.

    Magic and memories,
    Amy
