Welcome to planDisney, Doug. First off, thank you and your family for your service. As the mother and sister-in-law of military members, I can't thank you enough for your sacrifice. Second, so many CONGRATULATIONS on your son being in remission! Illness takes its toll on the patient and their loved ones, and I am so happy you all are taking the time to celebrate and recover.
So, let's dig right in! You've chosen one of my favorite times to visit the 'World. April usually has perfect weather (not too cold, not too hot, just right), and EPCOT's deliciously gorgeous
Flower & Garden Festival is running, which is an
adult fan favorite. You can eat and drink around the World while waiting to blast away on Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind!
Doug, I don't know if you've heard about
Shades of Green, but it is a Magic Kingdom Resort Hotel specifically for our military guests. With its proximity to the Magic Kingdom and the Transportation and Ticket Center, you can easily get anywhere on property, which would be helpful for your son. You can purchase
discounted Theme Park tickets through them, which is super convenient because they verify your military status during purchase, so you do not need to carry your military ID to the parks. You can also purchase discounted tickets at your local base's ITT office, and Disney has specially discounted
Military Salute ticket packages.
If you want to stay at a different hotel, I suggest the EPCOT Resort area.
Disney's Boardwalk Inn & Villas is one of my favorites because of its convenience. Not only do you have the BoardWalk right outside, with its fabulous selection of
restaurants and
attractions, but you are right next door to EPCOT (seriously, you head out to the BoardWalk and turn right, and it is <5 min walk to International Gateway). In the other direction, you are a 15-minute walk or a 10-minute boat ride to Hollywood Studios, with all the thrills and glamour suited for a celebration!
One last thing before you all head out to your adventure. Please take advantage of the
complimentary Resort transportation and consider using the
Minnie Van service to save energy. If your son needs rest or any
medical aid, First Aid Centers are located in every park and Disney Springs. Also, you might want to consider a wheelchair or ECV rental if your step count gets too high (we hit 10,000+ steps/day every time we visit!). I wish you all a magical celebration, and please don't hesitate to return with any additional questions.
