I’m unexpectedly in a walking boot days prior to our Disney trip. What can I do to help with this and not ruin my family’s vacation?

Howdy, Syren, and welcome to planDisney! You've got a friend in me because I was also in a walking boot during a Walt Disney World Resort visit a few years ago. Like Buzz and Woody, let's navigate the rough road ahead so you can have a magical time...to infinity and beyond!

I'd bet my top score on Toy Story Mania! that your family's vacation won't be ruined in any way by your injury. They'll want to make your time as special and memorable as they can. As the song says, no one will ever love you the way they do!

My first tip to help your visit roll smoothly is to consider renting an Electronic Conveyance Vehicle (ECV) or a wheelchair. You can find these at all four theme park entrances on a first-come basis. I rented a wheelchair when I found myself in a boot, and I'll admit it was a bit cumbersome for my husband to deal with all day. In hindsight, I'd probably prefer the ease of an ECV. You can also contact the Disney Featured Provider for scooters and mobility devices, ScooterBug. You can find their information on the ECV page.

Next, I recommend reviewing the Services for Guests with Mobility Needs for tips on navigating the parks in your boot. We found that asking a Cast Member at each attraction's entrance helped us decide whether to ride. For example, sometimes, they directed us to a different entrance to avoid stairs.

Keep in mind that there aren't written rules about which attractions you can and can't experience; I suggest you check with your doctor before your trip for their recommendations. I was able to hop aboard almost every attraction! I found it a little tricky to get comfortable on TRON Lightcycle / Run at Magic Kingdom Park, but you can sit in a test vehicle before you wait in the queue.

This visit might look a bit different from a typical theme park adventure, but I found that I enjoyed the slower pace in my wheelchair. I have a photo in front of Cinderella Castle wearing my boot, and it always helps me remember that I don't have to go at breakneck speed to have a fabulous time with my posse.

Syren, here's hoping you have as much fun as Slinky Dog on a tall flight of stairs. Please stop by planDisney again, and keep those snakes out of your (walking) boot!

    Magic awaits,
    Elaine
