Hi Alexa,
Thanks for cruising by planDisney with your question!
When it comes to official documents for travel outside the United States, I tend to overpack. I like redundancy. This is one reason why I think it is always
wise to travel with a valid US Passport. Also, in the unlikely event that you and your boyfriend might need to return to the United States by air instead of on the beautiful Ship, a
passport allows you to board the flight without delay.
With that said, if you are journeying on a "Closed Loop" itinerary, meaning that you will depart from and return to the same domestic port, and you are sailing to The Bahamas, Caribbean, Pacific Coast, Bermuda, or Canada, a passport may not be required.
According to this handy dandy reference sheet, your boyfriend could also present an original Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by the Department of State OR an original Certificate of Naturalization issued by US Citizenship and Immigration Services AND a valid, physical government-issued photo ID. Keep in mind that Guests without the appropriate documentation will be denied boarding.
If your boyfriend decides to apply for a passport, there is no time like the present! It can be a bit of a lengthy process, so encourage him to work on that ASAP to (potentially) save on additional fees to expedite the process. It looks like you will sail away on your Disney Cruise Line vacation before you know it!
Alexa, have you seen all the fun things you can do with a
