My 3 year old son loves putting on his Snow White dress. He will wear it to the park -- should I worry that other guests might be ugly about it to him? Any suggestions on shielding him from possible hurtful comments? I want his experience to be magical!

Hi, M!  Sometimes, you can't avoid ugly people.  They are everywhere, even at the most magical place on earth.  I can't tell you how sorry I am that you even have to be concerned about this, but from one Mom to another, I applaud you for giving your son the freedom to be himself!

So, let's work on dealing with the ugliness you might encounter.  First of all, he's three, and at that age, there could still be some ambiguity when you look at a child as to whether the child is a boy or a girl.  You may be protected in that way, that if they see your son in a princess dress, they will assume he's a girl and not say a word or give you a look.

If he's very verbal, you can give him a few snappy comebacks to things - or arm yourself with a few.  If someone says something like, "Why did you put your son in a dress?" you might snap back with "Because his tuxedo is at the dry cleaners!"  It will put people off guard if you have a few quick comebacks.

Redirecting is always a good tactic.  There is so much to do, so much to see, and so many directions to go.  You may be able to gauge ugliness as it begins to approach you, and if you see someone you think has venom on the tip of their tongue, just walk around them.  Don't let them come into contact with your little guy.

I am sending you all the virtual pixie dust and cyber hugs I can find.  You're doing a great job, Mama, and I know your little prince is going to rock the Snow White look!
