Hey there, hi there, Lisa! Welcome!
Your
Disney Cruise Line vacation looks like it's mere days away, so before you begin to panic about
required travel documents, I wanted to let you know that your 11-year-old should not require a passport.
I'm thinking you'll be on the
Disney Dream from Miami, and those cruises are what are known as "closed loop" cruises. That means that you will leave from a port in the United States and return to a port in the United States, and for that reason, you won't need a passport. What you will need, however, is an original or official copy of a birth certificate. It has to be a government-issued birth certificate, as opposed to the one you usually get from the hospital. Anyone over the age of 15 would also need a government-issued photo ID.
If your 11-year-old has a passport, I highly recommend bringing it with you. Although not required for the cruise, if there was an emergency and you had to return home by air, you will need a passport or have to jump through some hoops and incur additional expenses to get home by plane. I know it's too close now to get a new passport, but if you did have one, pack it just in case.
Have an absolutely amazing vacation, Lisa!
