I have a 12 year old who will be on the dining plan but won't eat from the adult menu. Can I order his meal from the kids meal and pay for that out of pocket while the rest of us use our dining plan.

    Hi Stephanie,

Everyone staying in the same room must have the same type of package. This means that if the rest of the family wants the Dining Plan, then your 12-year-old must also be on the plan. And since the 12-year-old is obviously over the age of 10, he will have to pay the adult price for the Plan. There's no option for you to buy the Dining Plan for some family members and pay solely out of pocket for your son.

However, at most of the table service restaurants, they will be happy to work with you to find food that your son will eat. For example, if there is a child's meal item that he finds more appealing than the adult options, generally the restaurants will be able to bring a kids' meal (sometimes in a larger portion) instead of an adult meal. Similarly, at most quick service restaurants, you can simply order a kids' meal instead of an adult meal.

While this will often work to get your pre-teen food that he will eat, it doesn't really solve the cost issue. If you're on the Dining Plan in the scenario, you will effectively be paying adult prices for child food. Depending on the composition of the rest of your party and their eating habits, it may or may not make sense for you to be on the Dining Plan. I encourage you to map out a few days of sample food consumption and compare the out-of-pocket price to the Dining Plan price. Menus with pricing are readily available for the Disney World restaurants. One good source for this is the independent website allears.net. Take a look at the family's potential food costs to see what makes most sense for you.

Good luck with your planning. Please let us know what else we can do to help.
