Julia,
I do love when I can afford to upgrade a room. When I can upgrade from a parking lot viewI feel like I have gotten my money's worth.
But I also don't like to spend money I don't have to. So my opinion (likely unpopular with other Disney enthusiasts) is that I would not spend the extra money to have a theme park view at the Polynesian. Here is why;
- While I love the lakeside view, I get plenty of that as I make my way around the resort, and when I am at the pool.
- I think that the view of the actual theme park, namely Cinderella Castle, is so far off as to not really be of much value.
- While I like the idea of having a view of the Wishes Fireworks show from my room, with younger children I actually DON'T want to see it. Why? If we want to watch, we go to the resort beach where they pipe in the show soundtrack. If we need an earlier bedtime, we don't want the lights peeking through the curtains keeping them awake.
The final, most important reason is this. When I am at the Polynesian I like our family to have the mystique of being in Hawaii or some other Polynesian isle. Facing into one of the lush garden spaces within the resort actually furthers that for me, rather than seeing the Contemporary off in the distance.
So my answer would be no, though you can imagine that there would be many that would encourage you, for good reason, to do it. Now hopefully you know more to make an informed decision right for you.
As to groceries, in the lobby building the stores do have some supplies, including milk, beverages, cereals, and some other consumables. If you write me back with more information of what you need I can recommend if they would have what you need, or if you might want to consider a grocery delivery company.
Have a magical vacation!
