I was wondering what the restrictions on using a disney gift card in the walt disney resort area are? thank you!

Not many. It's hard to list all of the places you can and can't use the Disney gift cards, but I can tell you from experience that they are accepted in the vast majority of places. We've used our Disney cards at restaurants, popcorn and ice cream stands, souvenir shops, and even to pay for room charges!

A few places offhand that I know you cannot use the Disney gift card are the cart vendors on the Boardwalk, the balloon sellers in the parks, and a few small snack stands (though at most of them you can).

I know this isn't a comprehensive list, but hopefully it's enough information to get you started!
