I was wondering how I would get from Animal Kingdom to Downtown Disney? Do some of the Disney buses go directly to Downtown Disney? And how long does it take? I don't want to waste 2-3 hours on a Disney bus per day.

For travel between resorts, and between a park and Downtown Disney ("DTD"), Disney's bus system is often not a very efficient option. It will get you there, but it will usually take some extra time.

To travel from the Animal Kingdom ("AK") to DTD you will need to take a bus to another Resort (preferably not one in the Magic Kingdom area, as that is way out of the way), and then catch another bus from there to DTD.  In total this could easily take an hour, and if the connections are bad it could be longer.

In the case of Resort to Resort, or park to DTD, I will usually try to take a taxi (or drive, if I have a rental car).  My time is too valuable while I am on vacation to wait for several bus connections.  A taxi will cost around $20 (maybe less), and will almost always save you significant time and hassle.

At the Animal Kingdom you can find the taxi stand if you go to the left of the parking lot tram pickup/drop-off area. They will be in the first parking lot in this direction (the walk is no longer that the walk to the Resort bus stops).  Ask a Cast Member if you have any doubts.  If you are worried about taxi availability (usually not a problem) you can call Mears Taxicabs at 407-699-9999 to reserve a taxi in advance.
