    Hi all! We are going to WDW in November and I am looking for suggestions on how to encourage our 11-y-old son to save some of his allowance money for souveniers! Any ideas to build the excitement and help with this? November seems really far away to him!

    Debra,

    This is a great idea!

    There are a few things I do to get my kids to save money for the trip. Some of these may work for you;

    Disney Store Online: The Disney Store Online (www.disneystore.com) now sells some in-park merchandise. Have him pick out something he is going to want and print it out. This can get him saving a certain amount every week to get him to the point of being able to afford it.

    Matching Funds: Many companies offer matching funds when you give to charity. Offer him a similar in-family program where you offer to give him $1 for every $5 or $10 he saves.

    Calendar: I work up a Disney-themed calendar, so they see how quickly the vacation is coming up on them. Also on our family computer is a countdown calendar that shows how many days remain, and every morning at breakfast we review how soon the trip is, how much money they have saved, and what they will/won't get if they keep up their current pace of savings.

    Paint a Picture: I sit the girls down with friends recently back from a trip to Walt Disney World. They list out all the items they bought while there, as well as what treats (ice cream, candy, etc.) they also enjoyed. I list it all out, price it out, and then set a budget of what they have to have saved to cover their special fun costs. They want to get all the things their friends get, so this helps motivate them.

    These are a few ideas. Let me know if you need more. Also, write me back with some of the things you think he will want to do/buy. I can help with move item-specific suggestions!

    Have a magical vacation!
