We are going to WDW for the first time December 1-11, 2009 with our kids who will be 12 and 11 then. We are a little stumped about which resort to stay at? We are evaluating moderate vs. value resorts, what do you think?

First and foremost, I believe you should have some flex room in your budget.  Your vacation will be more fun if you have spare money to buy souvenirs or unexpected treats, so I wouldn't  recommend stretching too much.

That said, if you can comfortably afford the upgrade to a moderate resort, I'd definitely do so.  The themeing is great at all Disney resorts, but my family prefers the subtlety of the moderate and deluxe resorts over the splashiness of the values.  Important for mom and dad (at least in our house!) is that the moderate resort rooms are slightly larger, and include a coffee maker in each room.  And our whole family enjoys the pools at the moderate resorts, which are free-formed and have fun waterslides.

Personally, if I were facing this decision today I would choose a moderate and make a reservation at Caribbean Beach, requesting a pirate room.  A certain section of the resort has just been converted to Pirates of the Caribbean themed rooms and they are amazing!  I was fortunate enough to be able to tour them a few weeks ago and I can't wait to stay in one myself.  The pool at this resort has also been completely redone and it is amazing!  It definitely rivals those of deluxe resorts, with a zero entry area, two waterslides, and a great pirate ship kiddie play area.

For a value resort, I would choose Pop Century.  It is the newest of the Disney value resorts, and has a great food court (with frozen coke!) and dedicated bus service.  However, another option you may like would be the family suites at All-Star Music resort.  They offer a separate master bedroom, kitchenette (with coffee maker! this is very important to me), and two bathrooms.

    Good luck with your decision!
