Hi! This WDW family is considering our first trip to Disneyland! What is your advice on planning June vs July vs August? Any difference in crowds or weather? We've never been to California! Any special events during the summer? Thank you!

Hi Amy! Thank you for bringing your question to planDisney!

As a California native who has practically lived at Disneyland Resort for multiple decades, I am honored to be the person who gets to answer your questions. Summer is such a fun time at Disneyland Resort. I am sure you will have a great time whichever month you choose to visit, but I am happy to share some month-specific insight to help you finalize your dates.

The month of June in Southern California is warm with the occasional "June Gloom" from time to time. The evenings can be cool and breezy, so make sure to pack a light jacket for nighttime exploration of the resort.

July is typically a busier month, but you will also see an increase in Entertainment then as well. Disneyland Resort is especially known for the firework spectacular on the Fourth of July; however, be mindful that Independence Day weekend is one of the year's busiest weekends. In July, I often book lunch reservations somewhere indoors right around when the weather is expected to reach peak hotness. Excellent indoor dining options include the Blue Bayou Restaurant, Carthay Circle Restaurant, and the Napa Rose

Lastly, August is one of the hottest months of the year in California, but that makes for the perfect excuse to ride attractions such as Grizzly River Run over and over again. Also, all three Disneyland Resort Hotels have incredible pools for hotel Guests to enjoy.

As a Walt Disney World family, I'm sure you have plenty of "must-dos" each time you visit Florida. But before I let you go, I want to give you some Disneyland Resort specific recommendations I think you will love:

    • A few years ago, our Tower of Terror was transformed into Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: BREAKOUT!, and it is SO much fun. You will laugh, sing, scream, sing some more, all on the same attraction.
    • Many of Disneyland Park's original rides are still open today, including one of my favorites, the Storybook Land Canal Boats. This relaxing ride will take you through the neighborhoods of some beloved Disney characters, such as Aladdin, Anna and Elsa, and Cinderella.
    • Ice cream is a MUST during the summer months, and the best shop at Disneyland Resort for a sundae has to be Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor. The Chocolate Chip Cookie Sundae hits the spot every time.
I hope you have a wonderful time in California this summer. If you need more advice on Disneyland Resort, please send your question over to planDisney!

    Safe travels,
    Lola
