Hello, April! The Mitsukoshi Department Store in the Japan Pavillion is a popular stop for visitors to
Epcot, and the souvenirs you find in here are much more diverse than your typical Mickey Mouse tee shirt. When my son and I were shopping there on our last trip, we became mesmerized with the "Pick-A-Pearl" process, and we spent quite a bit of time watching it.
While no reservations are needed, you will be given a number (similar to the deli counter at your grocery store) after purchasing your pearl ticket at the register. Sometimes the counter gets busy, so you may have to wait for 30 minutes or so, but there's plenty of authentic merchandise to look at that will keep you busy; my son was fascinated by the precious Gudetama character that looks like an egg.
The Cast Members are all very enthusiastic, and they often beat their Japanese drums while Guests are selecting their pearls. Here's a tip I overheard when I was watching: choose the oyster with the ugliest shell. After the pearl station employee cuts the oyster open, the pearl is given a quick cleaning and measured for size. Some lucky Guests even get twin pearls in their oyster! Afterward, I'd recommend heading over to dine at the brand new signature restaurant,
Takumi-Tei, which is scheduled to open later this summer!
April, just remember the "the world is your oyster," and I hope your trip is filled with treasured memories!
