When I was there in 2002 we could walk through the bottom of Cinderella's castle (if I remember right), but this last time the whole castle was blocked off, was it just for the holiday's or can you just not walk into the castle anymore?

Normally guests can walk through the main level of Cinderella Castle, using it as a passage to get from Main Street to Fantasyland. There are lovely mosaic murals there, as well as access to the entrances of the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and Cinderella's Royal Table. However, periodically throughout any regular day, the Castle passage is blocked in preparation for shows appearing on the Castle Forecourt stage. Once showtime has passed, the passage is reopened to guests. During the holiday season, there was lots of entertainment at the Castle, so that may have been what you encountered.

There may also be temporary upcoming changes to Castle access due to the major refurbishments happening at Fantasyland. But in general, yes, you can walk though the ground level of the Castle.
