Visiting with my 10 yr grandson who is Austic last year was nightmare. Explaining the wait was frustrating. Resulting in severe melt downs, which caused us to leave the parks. He is ambulatory and verbal. Does Disney offer anything to accommodate

    Hi Janet,

I am sorry that last year's trip was not as magical as it could have been. While my daughter has Aspergers, I totally understand how extra pixie dust might help your family have a better time this year.

First, Disney does offer a Guest Assistance Card (GAC). When you arrive at Guest Services at any of the four major parks, ask them for this card. This will help reduce the wait time. I will say the rules have recently changed to limit the number of cards issued. I highly recommend you bring documentation from your son's doctor staying his medical condition and needs. It is also at the discretion of the cast member to issue the card or not.

Second, stick to your grandson's schedule. This will help with the frustration. I still do this even now that our daughter is 16. Also, ask your grandson to help with the trip planning. Reducing the anxiety may help reduce a meltdown. Grab maps of the park when you arrive or even order customized maps on line.

Are you or someone tech savvy? If you have a tablet such as an iPad or a smartphone, get an app which will show you wait times for attractions. My Disney Experience will show you wait times and you can plan around delays. It might also be a way for your grandson to see the delay and monitor it. It might help him feel like he is control.

You can also bring snacks, play games or even have electronic devices in line to reduce the wait. We play Rock, Paper, Scissors and I Spy in lines even now.

    Wishing you a magical vacation!
