    Visiting WDW Oct 9-16. At the time I booked our trip (many months ago) I DID NOT realize Columbus Day was during that week or that it mattered. From what I've read here the word is to avoid that w-end. Is it really that bad? We're stuck with it. Thx!

    In any particular season, going on a holiday weekend is going to be more crowded than a non-holiday weekend. But all holiday weekends are NOT alike. Columbus Day weekend will be a bit more crowded that the weekends on either side (where the parks will be at near yearly crowd lows) but it will be NOTHING like the crowds you might see during Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, President's Week or most of the summer. If I had to choose a holiday weekend to visit WDW, Columbus Day would probably be it. In fact I was at WDW for Columbus Day in 2006 and did not experience significantly large crowds.

    For future reference, another thing to consider when planning a WDW visit in October is when the Jewish holidays fall. In much of the New York area (which is a big feeder for WDW), schools are off for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur so that the observant may celebrate. But for the many non-Jews, it's vacation time. Depending on where these holidays fall in relation to Columbus Day, it is often possible for New Yorkers to cobble together a five, six, or seven day vacation by having the kids miss only one day of school. And often that vacation means a trip to WDW. Again, since WDW is HUGE, it absorbs the influx quite easily, but if you're looking to visit at the absolute crowd low point, that confluence of holidays is something to think about.
