I am visiting WDW from Feb 11-16 with my two children (10 & 2) and my mother. My mother was diagnosed with Esophogeal cancer and has been doing Chemo treatments for a year. She has low stamina and can't be in direct sun for very long, any suggestions?

    Hi Jennifer,

I'm so sorry about your mother's situation. I hope her treatments continue to go well.

Your first stop should be at the Guest Relations office of the first theme park you visit. You can speak with an agent there about the possibility of obtaining a Guest Assistance card. This may allow your mother to enter some attractions via an alternate entrance to keep her out of the sun, or possibly reduce some waiting time.

You may also want to rent a wheelchair or ECV for your Mom. Even the most gentle of Disney visits typically involves walking at least 5 to 7 miles per day. If your mom has low stamina, this may be a bit much for her. Both wheelchairs and ECVs may be rented at the theme parks; however, when rented from the parks, these items cannot leave the parks. Another possibility is to rent from an outside agency. These are plentiful in the Orlando area (one reputable company is Buena Vista Scooters). The outside agencies typically deliver the wheelchair or EVC to your hotel prior to your arrival and pick it up when you leave.

The sun in FL can be quite strong, even in the winter. Consider bringing an umbrella or parasol for your Mom to carry in the park. I've seen this done many times. It's a great way to keep the sun off during the brightest part of the day.

Good luck with your planning. Please let us know if you have more questions.
