I am visiting Disney for the first time with a 7, 4, and 1 year old in March. I am trying to pick a resort that the kids will enjoy. Are the Deluxe resorts too fancy for the kids? Are the pools not as kid-friendly??

With the one teeny exception of the Victoria & Albert restaurant, EVERYTHING is kid friendly at Walt Disney World. Really. The "fanciest" hotel on property would be Grand Floridian. Despite the somewhat refined atmosphere, it is not the least bit stuffy. Children are everywhere. I have stayed there several times with my own children and they had a blast. In fact, the vast majority of my stays at WDW have been in the deluxe resorts, even when the kids were babies. I have never felt anything but completely welcome and relaxed there.

The pools at the deluxe resorts are actually much MORE kid-friendly than the other pools because of their additional slide, water play areas, and other features. The deluxe resorts actually have multiple pools. Usually one, or more, are called the "quiet" pools, because they are just regular pools. Kids are welcome there too, though there is no lifeguard present. The deluxe resorts also have incredible large pools which are well-staffed by lifeguards. The pool at WDW that is universally recognized as the best is at the Yacht & Beach Club resort. This is my family's preferred hotel; we've stayed there at least half a dozen times. The Y&B pool is three acres big. It has a shallow area with real sand, perfect for preschoolers and castle building. There is also a "lazy river" for drifting along on a raft, small and large water slides, regular swimming areas, and a whirlpool area.

If you want a deluxe experience that's great for kids, I'd choose either the Polynesian because of the fun atmosphere and great proximity to the Magic Kingdom, or the Beach Club because of the pool and the proximity to Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios.
