I am visiting in April of 2010 staying at All-Star Music, and we have ADR for Mickey's Backyard BBQ at 6:30pm. What is the best way to get to the Fort Wilderness Resort, and how much time should I allow?

    Hi Melissa,

Whenever my family has something fun to do in the evening at Fort Wilderness, such as attending the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Review or Mickey's Backyard BBQ, we try to spend the day in the Magic Kingdom.  That way we can take the boat from the Magic Kingdom to Fort Wilderness which is a very pleasant and relaxing trip.  Boats come fairly often and the boat dock at Fort Wilderness puts you very close to Mickey's Backyard BBQ, the Hoop-Dee-Doo Review, and the Trail's End restaurant.  If you have never been to Fort Wilderness before, it is a huge resort and has it's own internal bus system; taking a boat allows my family to get to where we are going at Fort Wilderness without getting on an internal bus.

It's been a couple of years since I've tried taking a bus from a resort to Fort Wilderness, but I remember it was fairly painful and long.  We would take a bus to Downtown Disney from our resort, then transfer to a bus going to Fort Wilderness, and then transfer to an internal Fort Wilderness bus.  To be safe, I suggest planning an hour and a half for the trip.  A much less time consuming option would be to take a taxi or drive a car to Fort Wilderness.  Just keep in mind that when you get to Fort Wilderness, you will have to transfer to an internal bus to get close to Mickey's Backyard BBQ.

Please do not let my answer scare you!  Mickey's Backyard BBQ is a great event and worth the effort to get there.  In fact, while my answer makes it sound like getting to Fort Wilderness is painful, it really isn't.  Just set aside enough time to do it and you'll be fine!  I try to visit Fort Wilderness at least once a year as my family really enjoys the Hoop-Dee-Doo Review and I love the food and prices at Trail's End; in my opinion Trail's End is one of the best bargains at Walt Disney World.

Have a magical vacation and write back if you have any more questions!
