I would like to visit WDW for Christmas in 2011. Is it very busy at this time of year? How do the crowds compare to July? Also how is the weather usually?

I was at Walt Disney World both in mid-July and Christmas week in 2010. From a crowd perspective, July was a better experience. Historically, the week between Christmas Day and New Year's Day is the absolutely busiest time of the year. There were several days around Christmas where the Magic Kingdom was near capacity and guest admission was controlled for several hours. This level of crowds can also happen in July, but this typically only happens on July 3-5. Later in the month is busy, but not as much.

The weather in July is steamy hot. You can expect to see high 80s and low 90s during the day. This is great if you want to swim or participate in water sports. My husband and I had a wonderful time this summer water skiing from the docks at the Contemporary. On the other hand, this high temperatures are not as pleasant for strolling in the parks mid-day. Can you say sweaty? You can also typically expect to see soaking thunderstorms many afternoons in July.

Late December temperatures are more variable. I have been at WDW many times in December and experienced low 80s. Equally as often, I've experienced highs in the low 50s. In 2010, most days in late December had highs in high 60s. This was wonderful for park touring. We wore fleeces in the morning and took them off in the afternoon. But we did very little swimming on that trip - too chilly.

As you can see there are pros and cons to each of these options. You should also consider pricing - which is high in July but even higher in December - as well as special events such as the Christmas activities in December.

Good luck with your planning. Let us know if you have additional questions.
