We are going to visit WDW in Ap., we are not big planners, and therefore do not want to make dinner reserv. until we get there and see what we want. we will not need character dinners, so is it really neces. to make reserv for every table service meal?

    Stephanie,

With the every increasing popularity of the Disney Dining Plan, the table service reservations have become more and more necessary.  This isn't limited to the character meals.  It is not uncommon for all restaurants to have little or no availability during busier periods (and April can be fairly busy).  You might be able to find some last minute cancellations during your trip, but I wouldn't count on it.  When you do find reservations at the last minute it is going to be more likely that these are outside of the parks (primarily at the Resorts), and/or at non-desired times.

I highly recommend that you at least make a few reservations in advance.  Most of the restaurants do not have a cancellation penalty (but you should cancel them if you aren't going to show up - it's the "right" thing to do), so it can't hurt and it does provide you with more options/flexibility.

At a minimum (think of it as a test - OK?) call 407-WDW-DINE and find out for yourself the availability of restaurants you might be interested in.  I think you will quickly find that the best places fill up fast and may already have limited availability.
