How are veterans chosen for the flag ceremony?

Welcome to planDisney, Jonathan! Mickey and I are grateful for your family's service and honored that you brought your question to us. You'll soon arrive at Walt Disney World Resort, so let's tip our caps and see what we can discover about one of my favorite events.

The Flag Retreat ceremony is held in Town Square each evening, and it's one of the most moving sights in the parks. My father and husband are veterans, so I love that the Disney Company honors those who have served in this way. You can check the schedule on the website or search for "Flag Retreat" on your My Disney Experience mobile app. This time of year, the tribute usually begins around 5:00 p.m.

I chatted with a stars-and-stripes Cast Member who said there is no specific procedure for being chosen to help with the Flag Retreat. It's as unpredictable as pixie dust but just as magical! So, while I can't give you instructions on how to make your patriotic dream come true, I have some ideas that couldn't hurt.

Since the early bird often gets the pixie dust, I recommend arriving when Magic Kingdom Park opens. Dress for the part by wearing a hat or shirt that shows you're proud to serve. You can also chat with Cast Members at the park entrance about how much you appreciate Disney's support of the military. Ask questions about the flag ceremony to show you're interested in attending, and I'll cross my fingers that your dreams fly as high as the flag!

Even if you aren't chosen as the veteran representative, I'm confident you will enjoy the stirring tribute at the Flag Retreat. You can participate in the pledge and belt out "The Star-Spangled Banner" with spirit. As the sun sets on Cinderella Castle, you can soak in the golden hour with pride in your heart. I'm getting goosebumps just picturing it!

Jonathan, I salute you and your family members who have served. Thanks again for stopping by planDisney, and have a magical time on your vacation. Three cheers for the red, white, and blue!

    Magic awaits,
    Elaine
