How does the updated Spaceship Earth attraction differ from the former one?

The Spaceship Earth attraction recently underwent a substantial rehab. It officially reopens in mid-February, but I was lucky enough to see the new version during a soft opening test run. I liked the old Spaceship Earth, but I like the new one better.

There is new audio throughout the attraction. There is a new score and new narration by actress Judi Dench. Near the beginning of the ride, the audio will direct you to face in a certain direction because a camera will snap your photo. Do what it tells you to.

During the first half of the ride, you travel through the history of communication. The audioanimatronic monks are still there illuminating their manuscripts. Samuel Morse still sends his message over the telegraph. The characters have new costumes and the sets have slightly different props, but the essence is substantially the same as the old Spaceship Earth.

The big changes come in the second half of the ride. When you are traveling backwards and returning to earth, a new interactive touch screen in each ride vehicle comes alive. You are asked to respond to several questions about your personal and communication lifestyle preferences. Do you prefer living in the city or the country? Things like that. After you've made your choices, an animated video appears on the screen illustrating how the future of communication can be tailored just for you. I have to say that this little personal video was one of the cutest things I have ever seen at a theme park. Remember the photo they took of you at the beginning? In the animation, that photo becomes the head of the character in the little film. So really YOU are in the video.  I was able to peek into the ride vehicle next to mine and their video was totally different from mine. They had answered the questions differently, so the story and setting was completely different, and their faces were on the characters. Each experience is totally unique. The technology behind this is amazing. I hope you have a chance to check it out soon.
