As a type 2 diabetic I want to take my meter kit to check my glucose during the day. Will I have any problems with security, as it has a sharp point that retracts? Thank you

Hi, Erin!  The first time I went to Walt Disney World after being diagnosed with diabetes, I was in a panic!  I had my syringes, my lancets, and I had an injector pen for the second type of insulin I was on.  I remember crying, thinking not only was I not going to be able to enjoy my favorite Walt Disney World foods anymore, but lamenting the fact that no way was I going to get through security with my bag of drug paraphernalia!  I was convinced that they would call the Orlando police in to haul me out the door, and knowing my family, they would have waved goodbye as they went through the turnstiles!

Guess what I found out?  I was not the first diabetic to go to Walt Disney World!  What a relief it was to get to the security check point, open my bag, and start to explain to the security guard the need for the needles and such, only to have her say, "Don't worry, we've seen it before!"  Whew!  It was like a weight lifted off of my shoulders, especially because my husband and children had already gone through the "no bags" line in preparation for abandoning me.

If you are on insulin, and you don't have a small cooler or FRIO pack to keep it cool, they will store it for you at the First Aid station in each park.  Just have it labeled by your pharmacy.  They also have a sharps container to dispose of your lancets if you need that.  They can bring one to your hotel room as well.

I also found that with all the exercise I did, I could enjoy a few of those treats I was afraid I'd miss!

Have an absolutely wonderful, worry free vacation!
