When trying to get to the Boardwalk via Epcot do we have to go into Epcot? What about the Disney Hollywood Studios option? Thanks.

Yes, to get to the Boardwalk from Epcot, you do need to enter the park. If you're coming in the front gate (by the Spaceship Earth "golf ball") you'll need to walk all the way through the park to the International Gateway exit located between the England and France pavilions in the World Showcase. The Boardwalk is located just on the other side of the Gateway.

If you don't want to use a theme park admission, it makes much more sense to use Disney's Hollywood Studios as your hub to get to the Boardwalk. From outside the DHS gates you can either take a quick boat ride to the Boardwalk, or if you're feeling energetic, you could take a 15 minute or so walk to get there.
