I am trying to plan our December 2012 trip, on a budget, of course. i am wondering what the pros and cons are of using a website such as Expedia, to book our hotel. Will I still be able to get the dining plan; would it be the same as Disney website?

Hi Ami!  Booking on Expedia or on the Disney World website will gain you the same dining deal and the same resort/ticket combinations.  There are a few differences however, that may make booking on the Disney site a better choice:

Primarily, when booking with a third-party vendor, as Expedia or Travelocity are, you will not be able to access your reservation on the WDW site, nor can you call Disney to make preferences to your resort stay.  Those all need to go through your OTA (online travel agency).

Secondly, Disney offers flexibility.  When booking an OTA, you are required to pay the balance in full at the time of booking.  When booking through Disney, a vacation package needs to be paid 45 days prior to arrival.  A room only stay is paid in full the day of arrival.  Should you need to make changes to your resort stay (days, adding on tickets..etc), you are able to do so without penalty or charge as long as it is done prior to the 45 day mark.

So, although you are offered the same benefits and packages as on the Disney website, should you need some flexibility with your dates and schedule, booking on the Disney website may be your best bet.

Hope this helps you plan your magical vacation!
