Hi Kayla,
You are going to be visiting during the very best time of the year! Not only is the weather usually pretty lovely in central Florida in January, but the energy during the
Walt Disney World Marathon is electric. I can't get enough of it, whether I am running or not! Even with that said, I totally understand your hesitation. Let's get right into it.
First, I am happy to say that you shouldn't feel much of an operational impact at all, though you might see some interesting runners-in-costume! It is my experience that the evenings during this storied weekend are actually the perfect time to visit some attractions that might normally have a longer queue. Since
runDisney participants wake long before the sun, normally needing to be on a bus before 4 AM, they tend to head to bed very early. That leaves more space in the theme parks for those with a more normal alarm time! So you are in luck. I would be sure to plan evenings in theme parks.
runDisney events generally wrap up before theme parks welcome Guests for the day, or, in the case of the Walt Disney World Marathon, certainly before noon. If you plan to visit
EPCOT on that day specifically, you might find yourself stopping to cheer on total strangers as they complete the final miles in what might have been a months (or years!) long journey to become a marathoner. This is a huge, emotional accomplishment and they are likely to be very tired. A quick, "You got this!" in the final stretch goes a long way.
Runners will have the course marked with cones that you can cross in low-traffic times, so even this inspiring experience shouldn't impact your day beyond a few minutes or so.
A quick word of advice, Kayla, is that it is very important to use official complimentary
Disney Transportation in the mornings during a runDisney race weekend. Some roads may be closed as the sun is rising and those busses will have access to backstage and alternative routes that are not otherwise available. They can get you on your way with minimal interruption.
The Walt Disney World monorail should not experience any service delays. You just might find yourself with some very tired, extremely proud runners. As the famous announcement says, "Please stand clear of the doors," because those achy runDisney participants just might be moving slowly, and that final step up can be a challenge!
If you want to witness something really special, consider rising early to stake-out a spectator spot on Main Street U.S.A. on Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. As runners make their way around the turn and down this iconic stretch, you will see emotions pouring out. You might find yourself wondering who is chopping onions around you as your eyes start to leak every so slightly. There is nothing like that moment!
I hope that helps as you plan your January vacation! And hey, if you find yourself wondering how to participate in a runDisney event in the future, come back and join us with any questions! We love to help!
Adventure is out there,
Sally
