The
flag family is unique to the Wilderness Lodge. None of the other resorts have a guest-involved tradition as special as this one. The WL is my Disney Vacation Club home resort, I love the atmosphere there. We have not yet had the opportunity to be the flag family, but this is something that I am very much hope to do on a future visit.
I had the opportunity to stay at the Boardwalk (another great resort, by the way) for the first time in July 2008 with two of my daughters. The Boardwalk location is perfect for me and I was very much looking forward to staying there -- except for one thing: the pool. Don't get me wrong, most people would love the Boardwalk pool. It's large, clean and well-maintained, with nice special features for the kids and a great poolside bar. My one small problem was the clown-themed slide. The giant water slide has a clown facade, so that when you come down the slide you end up pouring out of the clown's mouth. Kids LOVE this. However, I happen to have a bit of a clown phobia (alright, maybe a super, huge, ginormous clown phobia). I told this to my fellow Moms Panelists and my good friend Beth told me about a tradition at the Boardwalk: The first children at the pool every day are invited to go down the slide wearing a frizzy red clown wig and oversized glasses. I thought she was just trying to get my goat, but apparently this is true. While this is one bit of Disney magic that doesn't happen to be my cup of tea, if you or your children like clowns, you might want to get to the pool early.
