    Any tips on what to tell the kids when they ask why the characters don't talk? :)

    Hi Stacey,

    Well, actually Mickey does talk now. If you want to meet a talking Mickey, visit him at Town Square in the Magic Kingdom (near the park entrance). New technology has been developed which allows Mickey to move his mouth and respond to guests with a variety of phrases.

    And of course all the "face" characters, the ones that look like people, can have full conversations about almost any topic. The face characters include the princesses, Jack Sparrow, Peter Pan, Aladdin, Alice, Mary Poppins, and several others. However, there are still many characters that speak only using body language rather than words. These include Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, Chip & Dale, Stitch, the Toy Story characters and many more.

    Believe it or not, the characters are so animated (ha!), that many children don't even noticed that they're not talking. I won't bring it up if your kids don't. If they do ask, some popular responses are:

    - Minnie is saving her voice for a performance.
    - Minnie doesn't want kids who don't speak English to feel bad, so she's just using mime.
    - There's an illness going around with the characters and they've been told not to talk.
    - The characters are playing a game to see who can go the longest without speaking.

    Or if your children are older, you can turn their question into a "teachable moment." Perhaps ask them why they think the characters don't speak. Sometimes their answer is better than anything you can possibly come up with.
