Taking my mom who is in her late 70’s to Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom in May. She is in a manual wheelchair and has dementia. We will mostly do shows and rides that allow mom to stay in her chair. Is it needed or appropriate to get a DAS pass?

    Hey there, Theresa!

I’m thrilled to welcome you back to planDisney! It’s always wonderful to see familiar faces, and we truly appreciate you trusting us again as you plan your Disney vacation. I love that you’re planning a springtime trip to the Most Magical Place on Earth with your mom. I actually took a mother-daughter trip with my own mom last spring, and we had the absolute best time together, though in our case, the roles were a little reversed since I’m the wheelchair user!

Walt Disney World Resort is incredibly accommodating and accessible for Guests with mobility disabilities. I’ve been using a manual wheelchair in the parks since I was six years old, and today I navigate the parks independently with my husband and our two children. The thought and care Disney puts into accessibility is truly impressive and is one of the main reasons my family keeps coming back again and again.

Every detail is designed with all Guests in mind. From smooth, paved pathways that make moving around effortless, to ride queues built to accommodate mobility devices, Disney ensures that everyone can enjoy the magic. There are designated seating areas for shows, parades, and fireworks, so no one misses a moment of the fun. Accessible complimentary transportation options, including buses, monorails, boats, and the Disney Skyliner, make getting around the resort simple and stress-free.

Disney’s Disability Access Service, or DAS, is designed for Guests with developmental disabilities who may have difficulty waiting in a traditional queue. While it isn’t specifically intended for mobility disabilities, you’re always welcome to connect with a Cast Member via live video chat up to 60 days before your visit. They can help explain which services might be most helpful for your mom.

I also highly recommend checking out the Services for Guests with Mobility Disabilities page on the Walt Disney World website. It’s full of useful information to help plan your visit. The Theme Park Guide Maps for Guests with Disabilities are another great resource to review ahead of time, so you know what to expect. And of course, once you’re in the parks, Cast Members are always nearby and happy to assist whenever you need it.

Theresa, I really hope this has been helpful, and you have the very best trip with your mom. If any other questions pop up, you're always welcome here at planDisney!

    Magical Wishes,
