We are taking our very first cruise in October on the Fantasy to the Western Caribbean. As far as Excursions, can you just get off the ship and go to the beach or do you have to book this? Such a Newbie at this.

Welcome aboard, Gayle! Congratulations on booking your very first cruise with Disney! Setting sail on the Disney Fantasy will be so wonderful for your family, and you'll really enjoy the Western Caribbean itinerary.

If you choose not to book a Port Adventure in one of the ports, you are still absolutely welcome to disembark on your own to explore the port. Some ports do have a beach nearby, but most of the time, you'd need to take a taxi to reach the beach. Keep in mind that many beaches will charge for use of chairs, umbrellas and other beach items, so when you add that to the cost of the taxi, I usually find it's much easier to simply book a beach adventure with Disney Cruise Line. Letting them take care of all of the details makes my family feel secure, comfortable and we know that we won't accidentally miss the ship! I love that Disney Cruise Line's Port Adventures meet right on the ship, and we walk off as a group with our guide to begin our adventure. The nice thing about most of the adventures, too, is that they arrive back at the port with plenty of time for our family to then explore the port area on our own before we must be back onboard.

But, we have also explored and traveled to beaches on our own. With just a little research beforehand, you can look up some of the popular beaches near the port and find out details on the costs. Then, just hop a taxi and let them know where you'd like to go. For example, in Grand Cayman, Surfside Beach (on Seven Mile Beach) is just a short ride away, and normally will cost about $5 per person to get there on a bus or taxi. There is a charge of around $4 for an umbrella and $6 for chairs, plus they offer snorkeling equipment, jet skis and kayaks for rent as well. There were bars and restaurants right there, and it can certainly make for a nice day at the beach without having to travel too far from the port. Taxis are readily available there to take you back to the port. I hope that helps as you begin to plan, Gayle!
