Will be staying at Wilderness Lodge next May. I have read that Fort Wilderness has an animal petting area. Can we do that if we're not a guest of Fort Wilderness? Can you walk there from Wilderness Lodge or drive? We have a car. You are are SOOO helpful!!

Anyone can visit the animal area at Fort Wilderness. There are pony rides for children there too!

There is a lovely walk/bike path that runs between Fort Wilderness and the Wilderness Lodge. This distance is about 3/4 of a mile. The front desk of the WL can give you a map showing you where the path is. The last time we stayed at the Wilderness Lodge (our DVC home resort!) we rented a surrey bike and took it on the path to Fort Wilderness. On the way back, we saw a family of live deer just steps away from the path. They were majestic. This is one of my favorite Disney moments ever.

If you didn't want to walk to Fort Wilderness, the next best option would be to take the boat there. There is a water launch that leaves frequently from the dock at the WL and takes your right to FW. I would discourage you from driving because the FW parking lot is veeeeery far away from the petting zoo area. You would actually need to take a bus to get from the FW parking lot to the petting zoo. Both the boat and the walking path place you steps away from where you want to be.

    Have a great trip!
