We are staying on resort at Art of Animation, we’re coming for 4 days but only doing the parks for 2 days. Are there any fun free activities for a family to do on days not going into the parks?

Hey there Matt, it's great to see you back here at planDisney!

I hope you're all getting excited for your first ever Walt Disney World Resort vacation with your two little ones that planDisney pal Brent already helped you with, and I bet the boys are super eager for your stay at Disney's Art of Animation Resort. As a proud Duncle (or Disney Uncle) to two little dudes myself as well as a budding tiny Disney-loving niece I can totally get wanting to have a day to just relax at the resorts without necessarily going to the theme parks - especially when they're still on the younger end. Personally we can't wait for all of them to get tall enough to be able to ride everything and really make the most of each day, but in the meantime there are a few free things you can experience together on those days you have to wander:

    • If you're not immediately heading to a theme park on your first day, it's a great chance to explore everything at your immediate surroundings to see how the kids do over several hours in the Florida heat - and in your case there are really so many details from beloved Disney films for you to take photos with at Disney's Art of Animation Resort. Its recreational activities alone are fantastic and you'll find a board of the current offerings posted near the lobby; some of the free things for families to do include Story Time Yoga and a Family Wellness Dance Class in the morning and there's slightly secret activity in the lobby called Secrets of the Enchanted Gallery that you might find as a fun indoor activity using the Play Disney Parks mobile app!
    • I definitely recommend taking advantage of snagging one of the cone-shaped cabanas by the Cozy Cone Pool (they're absolutely free and first come-first served compared to the ones you'd actually pay for at other Disney Resort Hotels). Go pool-hopping to The Big Blue Pool nearby to enjoy the afternoon Poolside Activities with the Recreation Cast Members and explore Schoolyard Sprayground or even Squirt’s Righteous Reef if you've already gotten dry, and after dinner you can roast marshmallows over a campfire near Pride Rock in the evening as a final treat before bedtime.
    • When I was a kid on my first-ever Disney trip, even just taking the wide variety of complimentary resort transportation was a fun activity in itself (and let's face it, when you're that young everything is just a blur of fun and wonder). I highly encourage you to take a trip on the Disney Skyliner when you all get a chance, and don't be afraid to explore everything the other Disney Resort Hotels have to offer - like experiencing some great savanna sightings of giraffes and zebras at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge!
I hope you and your family have the best time here this month, and be sure to check out the Disney Parks Blog for more great ideas for you all to enjoy for free on this visit!

Here's to having some super fun experiences that you won't need to necessarily spend anything on!
