We are staying at the Grand Floridian for 5 nights in Aug. what are some (free) activities, if any, that my 8yr old daug. should look for during our stay? Also, do you know if there are any beach toys avail. for building castles?

    Jodi,

We stay at the Grand Floridian on most family stays, and with a 5 and 7 year old I am right there with you!

Unfortunately no, there are typically no sand toys like you describe around for use. Since we are not supposed to swim in the lagoon anyway we don't go to the beach much, though they are nice.

When it comes to free activities, there are a few.

We spend a lot of time at the pools. My kids love the Beach Pool for the water slide, but the 'free' element that is most important is the events counselors. They are young, energetic, and well trained counselors that Disney puts in the pool area to entertain kids with with music, games, and other activities. It actually is good for parents too, as it means we can relax a bit as well.

We also frequent the Courtyard Pool, for the ping pong tables. Also there in the evening are the Movies Under the Stars. You will get the schedule of what they show when you check in. The movies are free, and it is a great alternative in the evening to the crowded parks.

There are even more activities at the adjacent Polynesian, so don't overlook that particular resort. You can walk there and ask for an Activity Schedule from the front desk to discover some of the cultural activities, crafts, and other events that occur.

BOTTOM LINE: This may not sound like a lot, but I can tell  you that we are kept pretty busy with what you see here. I would wait until you enjoy your first afternoon at the pool before you consider buying some of the beach toys in the gift shop, as I expect you will find you really don't need them.

Write me back if you have any follow-up questions!

    Have a magical vacation!
