We are staying at the Fort Wilderness cabins in February 2026... I have a 5 pound Yorkshire Terrier... I'm concerned about him darting out the door when a cast member does a room check... What should I do???

Welcome to planDisney, Mary! Thanks for stopping by with your question about bringing your doggy with you during your next visit to the Walt Disney World Resort!

I'm right there with you. Keeping my dogs safe while we are on vacation is very important because after all, they are family. I take my two dogs, Buster and Bruno, to stay with my family at the resort all the time. As a matter of fact, they just enjoyed a visit during my family's most recent stay at The Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort.

Cast Members will ask you to put a sign on your door. The front desk also makes a note that a dog will be in your room. This means a housekeeper will not enter your room unless you schedule housekeeping service directly with them by calling from your cabin. It's an added precaution for the safety of your pet and the housekeepers. It also works the same with a room check. Cast Members have always come by during my visits to do a room check when they see that someone is in the room. They ask me to put my dogs on a leash so they can do the room check.

I would also recommend taking a travel kennel along for the trip. My boys are never left loose in the cabin. We always keep them in their kennels when we are away to make sure they feel safe.

Dogs are expected to be well-behaved, leashed in public areas and properly vaccinated. I asked my vet for a printout of my dog's vaccinations before we left for our vacation and kept the paperwork handy.

Mary, I hope this gives you some piece of mind as you continue to plan your visit. Please feel free to come back to see us if you have any more questions. It's always our pleasure to help you with all the details of your next vacation!
