We will be staying at the Campsites at Fort Wilderness in a few weeks, and my son is VERY into fishing. Are there any places/opportunities for him to practice catch-and-release with his own fishing rod, or do we need to book a fishing excursion/tour?

    chEARs Jason,

Welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel. I love that your son enjoys fishing, and you have picked the perfect Resort for him to enjoy his hobby!

Since you are Guests of the Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, your son is free to stop by the Meadows Lake with his rod and bait. They have catch and release fishing, and no reservation is necessary. If he wants to try another lake, there is dockside fishing at Fishin’ Hole at Ol’ Man Island at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort - Riverside. If he needs equipment, he can rent at both locations.

If the two of you would like to join a guided fishing excursion, you have plenty of options across Walt Disney World Resort. The Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort has guided tours as well as the self-guided fishing. Also, the Resorts along Bay Lake and Seven Seas Lagoon offer fantastic fun, and you have a magical view to boot!

When he is fishing, he will be catching and releasing largemouth bass. He can read all about their habitats, bait, lures and best fishing methods on the Fishopedia section of takemefishing.org.

Jason, if you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to come back. I wish you both a “reel” lot of fun!
