My son is obsessed with trains! I know the railroad at MK is shut down but is there a way we can ride the monorail to enter or leave the park. I don’t mind if it ends up taking us out of the way, he just needs the train. We are staying AoA if that matters.

Hi there, Megan! Welcome back to planDisney! We appreciate you taking the time to reach back out and allowing us to help you plan another visit to Walt Disney World Resort!

The Walt Disney World Railroad is one of the iconic features that greet Guests as they enter into the Magic Kingdom! This steam train was originally built between 1916 and 1928 and has rumbled along its tracks since this time as a nostalgic way of traveling around the Magic Kingdom. Though it is not currently circling the Magic Kingdom as it receives refurbishments, Guests can actually take a photo with the train as the backdrop at the Fantasyland station! So, this may be an extra special photo opportunity for your son to enjoy!

You are also perfectly welcome to enjoy a ride on the Walt Disney World Monorail during your visit! Guests can use this form of transportation as a way to get to the Magic Kingdom or just sit back and enjoy their ride! I do highly recommend taking the opportunity to tour some of the Disney Resort hotels along the monorail line, though. These resorts are some of the most classic ones on the property and they also boast many different picturesque areas to relax at!

One final recommendation I have for you and your son is to make your way over to The Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge! This is another destination that is just a short boat ride away from the Magic Kingdom. Here, you will find some train sets from Walt Disney’s personal collection on display for Guests to view! Even as someone that is not obsessed with trains, I found this exhibit to be very interesting and would highly recommend it for any train enthusiast!

I hope you and your family have a magical time visiting Walt Disney World Resort this summer! Please let us know if we can provide any other planning assistance as well!
