My son is 11. But he doesn't eat more than the 3-9 child size portions that Disney offers. Is it a requirement that I order an "adult menu" meal for him when in a sit down restaurant?

If you're paying out of pocket for your meals, then anyone can order anything regardless of their age. My pre-teen daughters order about half the time from the kids menu and half from the adult menu depending on how hungry they are and what they're in the mood for. We've never been questioned on this.

At one recent meal at the Sci-Fi Dine-In, my 9-year-old daughter ordered an adult meal and my 60+ year old mother ordered a kids meal. Our server didn't bat an eyelash and brought everyone the food that they ordered with no problems at all.

If you are on the Disney Dining Plan things become a bit more complicated. On the Plan, guests ages 3-9 are counted as children and guests ages 10-up are counted as adults. Kids are supposed to order from the kids' menu and adults are supposed to order from the adult menu. So, theoretically, your son will need to order adult meals. However, in practice, I can't see any cast member giving you a hard time about getting a less expensive child's meal instead of the adult meal she is entitled to. Simply explain your situation to your server and they will be very likely to accommodate you.
