Hi Kimberly,
Welcome back to planDisney! Disney World just recently revamped its
Services for Guests With Disabilities and released comprehensive information on how to navigate rides and attractions at Disney World.
There are a few different ride categories available: May Remain in Wheelchair/ECV, Must Be Ambulatory, Must Transfer from Wheelchair/ECV, Must Transfer to Wheelchair, and Must Transfer to Wheelchair, Then to Ride Vehicle. To figure out what rides will qualify for
May Remain in Wheelchair/ECV filter first on "Accessibility & Advisories" and then select your transfer requirements. If you can not transfer from the ECV then most of the options will be shows or attractions. The amount of shows and attractions at each of Disney World's theme parks is still pretty epic and enough to fill a vacation full of adventure.
If your guest is willing or able to
transfer to a wheelchair, then several more traditional ride options will open up for them. They will be able to enjoy Kilimanjaro Safaris at Animal Kingdom, Toy Story Mania at Hollywood Studios, and several rides at Magic Kingdom or EPCOT. This designation opens up most of your iconic Magic Kingdom rides like "it's a small world," the Walt Disney World Railroad, and Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin. Rides that require a transfer to a wheelchair will typically have a ride transfer area where you can move to the side and will have wheelchairs available for you to transfer to.
I recommend familiarizing yourself with the
My Disney Experience app before your trip because it is a great way to quickly check what rides your travel party can all enjoy together. You can click on each ride in the map feature and it will display detailed accessibility information for that particular attraction. To find the map feature, click on the bubble icon that is second from the left on the bottom and start exploring.
Happy Planning,
Jenna
