I am a single father traveling with my 6 years old son to WDW this summer. If I wanted to go for a ride that my son doesn't qualify for (because of height or age) is there a supervised waiting area for him to wait for me or not?

I'm sorry to tell you that there is no such waiting area. Cast members are not allowed to watch children in the parks. There is no in-park supervised or babysitting area.

I do, however, have an alternative for you. Several of the WDW resort hotels have childcare centers on site. You do not need to be staying at that particular hotel to use the service. The centers are generally open in the late afternoon and evening and will care for potty-trained children ages 4-12 for up to about 6 hours. I have used these centers several times myself with great success. In fact, my girls always beg to go there even if we don't need a sitter. There are other kids to play with, movies, games, and craft activities. You son would have a great time there and you could use the opportunity to explore some of the more grown-up activities at WDW for a few hours. For more information or to make reservations call 407-WDW-DINE.
