Hi Ali,
Welcome to planDisney! I know that navigating new scenarios with a neurodivergent child can be difficult but luckily, Disney World has got your back. They recently revamped their
Services for Guests with Disabilities to make it more streamlined and easier to access for people who need them.
I recommend taking a look through the
Accessibility Planning Guide before your trip so you have a good handle on all the options to make the experience as seamless as possible for your child. One thing that is super helpful for some kids with autism is to review the posted maps before your trip and have a plan for the day so they know exactly what to expect. I also like to review the maps so I know exactly where all of the quiet relaxation areas are if we need a little escape throughout the day.
Another great service available for guests who have difficulty standing in lines for an extended period of time due to a developmental disability like autism or similar is
Disability Access Service (DAS). DAS doesn’t mean you get to skip the lines for rides and attractions, but it does allow Guests to request a return time for a specific experience that is comparable to the current standby wait. We use this time to wait in a quiet area and enjoy a refreshing snack.
If you are interested in seeing if you qualify for this service, you will need to participate in a virtual chat before your visit. You can do this up to 30 days before you arrive. The chat is super simple and only took me about 30 minutes. You will need to make sure that your child is with you when you request the online chat because they will need to take a photo of the guest who qualifies for DAS during the conversation. Keep in mind that DAS can only be used by a qualified guest and up to 3 immediate family members during your visit. It will be valid during events and normal operating hours at all Disney World theme parks.
Happy Planning,
Jenna
