Hi Sara,
Disney World has done a fabulous job of ensuring that the theme parks are accessible to everyone. The
Services for Guests with Mobility Needs Guide does a great job of explaining how to navigate Disney's theme parks with a wheelchair, ECV, or any other mobility device. I like to review it ahead of time so I have a good understanding of which rides and attractions will require vehicle transfers and which ones you can remain in your ECV to enjoy.
If you do not typically use an ECV or wheelchair and need to
rent an ECV while at Disney World, there are a few options for you. Rentals directly through Disney World are on a first-come-first-served basis. There are no reservations accepted so if you need one of these devices, I recommend arriving early. The rental locations are right inside the entrance to each theme park. One important thing to remember is that if you rent from Disney World, you will not be able to take the ECV out of the theme park. Before you leave each theme park, you will have to return your ECV device even if you are traveling to another Disney theme park. If you have plans to visit another Disney theme park on the same day, you can keep your receipt and show it to the rental location when you arrive at your next location. You will not have to pay the rental fee more than once a day, but you will also not be guaranteed an ECV when you arrive at the second location.
If you are worried that members of your travel party will need an ECV while on transportation or at your Disney Resort hotel, Disney World has a featured provider called ScooterBug. When renting through this third-party provider, you will be able to keep your device with you for the duration of your visit. There are ramps available while utilizing most forms of
Disney World transportation, but you will need to work with your hotel to ensure there is enough space to store and charge your device in the evening. ScooterBug is the only provider that is authorized to deliver ECVs directly to Bell Services at your Disney Resort hotel and pick them up from there when you leave. This is super helpful for people who know they will need the ECV throughout the entire time they are visiting.
Happy Planning,
Jenna
