We are sailing on the Wish this summer. I would like to give my five grandchildren gift cards to use onboard the ship. Can they use the physical card in the merchandise shops or is it required to be added to the folio for their staterooms? Thank you!

    Ahoy there, Cathy!

Welcome aboard planDisney! It sounds like you have a truly magical summer voyage planned, and what a fantastic way to sprinkle a little extra pixie dust on your grandchildren’s adventure! Not only will they have an unforgettable time onboard the Disney Wish, but it sounds like they’ll be coming home with some special treasures to remember it by!

Great news—Disney Gift Cards can absolutely be used for purchases onboard! While Disney prefers that Guests use their Key to the World card or DisneyBand+ for transactions, they understand that sometimes an alternative payment method makes sense—especially when it comes to giving little sailors their own spending money. Your grandkids can use Disney Gift Cards in the merchandise shops, including Shutters and Senses Spa!

Now, just between us, I keep wishing Disney would introduce a way to set spending limits to your onboard account for kids—because let’s be real, unless you use a gift card, it can feel like a golden ticket to an unlimited shopping spree when you're surrounded by all the amazing merchandise onboard! But until then, I have a couple of helpful tips to make sure those gift cards stay safe and sound.

First, I highly recommend writing each grandchild’s name and stateroom number on their gift cards. I may have had to make an emergency trip to Guest Services once (or twice) when a certain someone in my family—okay, fine, it was me—misplaced a DisneyBand+. A labeled gift card has a much better chance of making its way back to its rightful owner if it goes on a little unexpected adventure of its own.

Second, if you or another member of your crew is a Gold (or higher) Castaway Club Member, you might want to join the grandkids on their shopping trips! Disney often offers discounts for Castaway Club Members, so having a seasoned sailor with them could help stretch their treasure trove of Disney dollars a little further.

Cathy, I hope you and your grandkids have the most magical time onboard the Wish! If you need anything else, you know where to find me—I’m always happy to be your Fairy Godparent of Disney Cruise Line fun!

Sea ya real soon with love in the air and magic everywhere,
    Dustin
