Can you reconmend some money saving trips for a family traveling with two girls, ages 4 and 6? Already have hotel, flights, and rental car- looking for ideas to save in food and merchandise. Thanks!

Hi, Andrew!  With as  many trips as we take to Walt Disney World, I have become the queen of looking for ways to do it less expensively.

If you want to eat your meals in the theme parks or hotels, I recommend sharing.  My husband and I would often order an appetizer each, then split an entree and dessert.  In some cases, we really could make a complete meal out of just an appetizer and dessert, and skip the entree altogether.

With a car available, I also don't mind traveling off property to eat.  If I am going to leave during the day for a break, we'll grab burgers or tacos to take back to the hotel room with us.

I bring snacks like granola bars, fruit snacks, nuts, and other non-meltable items with me instead of buying snacks at the parks.  If I am going to buy a snack, I buy shareable - like popcorn or a turkey leg.

I always keep stuff for breakfast in the hotel room.  If you are renting a car, you can make a stop at  Walmart or a grocery store, and pick up things you could eat quickly in the morning, or even take with you.  You don't say which resort you are staying in, but if you have a refrigerator, you can keep yogurt, milk, juice, and have a nice breakfast with that and some cereal.

As for souvenirs, the kids in my house each have a budget.  It varies, but they can each always get a little something.  We have a chore jar at home, which allows them to earn extra money that they can spend if they wish.  You will also find a great selection of Walt Disney World themed merchandise at the local Walmart.

    Have a great vacation!
